Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne
Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne is Europe’s most cosmopolitan technical university. Students, staff and professors from 120 nationalities come to that university. For that reason, the officials of the institutions are always guided by the will to open up the school through its teaching opportunities and research facilities. EPFL constantly creates partnerships with various establishments like engineering schools and universities not only to develop Switzerland but other emerging countries as well.
There are only 2 Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and EPFL is one of them. Since 1969 it has been recognized as a national school in the country and it has grown on many dimensions as a technical engineering establishment to the point where it has become famous at the European level when it comes to science and technology.
The technical school has 3 core missions which are training, research and the transfer of technology so to achieve that goal it has associated itself with many other specialized research institutions in the country.
The school is located in Lausanne on the shores of Lake Geneva, one of the largest in Europe. The main campus takes up to 11,000 people comprising of researchers, staff and students. The dynamism in the institutions has enabled it to create an environment driven by curiosity and simplicity. The scientific, architectural and technological projects that take place in the school are driven by the interaction between students and researchers.
A degree recognized worldwide
People attending EPFL can choose between the 13 complete study programs from Bachelors to Masters. There are many technical courses ranging from Basic Sciences to Engineering passing through Information Technology and Communication. Student can also specialize in Architecture, Construction and Environment.
The school is very much interested in giving the opportunity to the students to try their hands in the field, that is why there are numerous industrial internships available for the graduates to get used to the realities on the ground.
There is a Doctor School allowing Ph.D students to work within communities beyond their lab. The infrastructure to conduct the research are excellent and give the students a unique environment to use their skills.
Research
There are 350 laboratories and research groups found on the EPFL campus and that places the establishment in a top position in Europe when it comes to innovation in scientific research. In many scientific ranking, the technical school is ranked among the top 3 in Europe and top 20 worldwide. Over the years, the best researchers in different fields have been attracted to EPFL and that is due to its unique structure that fosters trans-disciplinary research promoted through partnerships with other institution.
Campus life
The EPFL campus is found next to University of Lausanne (UNIL) and that adds to the dynamism of the city of Lausanne which offers a range of sporting and cultural activities that can be enjoyed by most.
Women are encouraged to take part in the different activities going on and they benefit from a support policy to get them promoted at all levels.
Lausanne is the city known for hosting the seat of the International Olympic Committee. It is not a surprise if students are encouraged to take part in all sporting activities. EPFL is a school for those who want to be technically grounded but at the same time have fun and get involved in sports.
